Paul Mark of Paul Mark and the Van Dorens in the Studio with Carolyn Fox

Show-stopping blues guitarist Paul Mark of Paul Mark and the Van Dorens joined Carolyn Fox in the studio to discuss his new CD, “The Smartest Man in the Room,” which will be released at the end of the month.

Paul Mark will be a special guest on the upcoming Blues Edition of “Carolyn Fox’s Hollywood Spotlight” which will air on Saturday, May 26 at 1 AM on 1580 AM in Los Angeles.

The new “Smartest Man in the Room” CD is destined to be classic.  The rhythms are compelling and the lyrics are funny and thought provoking.  Paul Mark and the Van Dorens are true artists who have honed these tunes performing for live audiences.  Recorded in New Orleans and Memphis, this album delivers a swaggering sound that you generally can only get live.

A rouges’ gallery of public figures (Dick Cheney, Colin Powell, Alan Greenspan, and Bernie Madoff ) appear on the cover art as members of an elementary school class.  The liner notes not only provide a map of who’s who, but also the damning quote that earned them a nomination for “Smartest Man in the Room.”  This is one album you’ll want to have on CD.

The lone cover track on the album, “Don’t Ya Tell Henry,” a Dylan tune from “The Basement Tapes,” captures the high-octane energy of a great night in the club and features some killer singing.  Check out the new video below and tune into “Carolyn Fox’s Hollywood Spotlight” on May 26 to hear more music and the interview with Paul Mark.

Funny men Jim Meskimen and Phil Proctor in the Studio with Carolyn Fox

Carolyn Fox was lucky enough to have not one, but two world-class actors and comedians in the studio today:  Jim Meskimen who has appeared in many films and TV shows, including 5 Ron Howard films, the improv comedy show “Who’s Line is it Anyway,” and was the voice of George W. Bush and other politicians on viral JibJab animated shorts; and Phil Proctor of  the surrealistic classic rock-comedy troupe The Firesign Theater (“Don’t Crush That Dwarf, Hand Me the Pliers,” “How Can You Be in Two Places at Once,” etc.) and who was voice was Howard in the animated TV series “Rugrats,” and has appeared in such Pixar films as “Monsters Inc.” and “Finding Nemo,” among many other creative projects.

These two comic masters met and recognized each other as kindred spirits, when Jim directed Phil as one of the actors on the production of “The Golden Age of Pulp Fiction” as audio books.  To be in the same room with these comedic forces of nature is to be overcome with laughter and awed by their rapid-fire wit.

On Saturday, May 19 at 7 PM, Jim Meskimen will appear live in “Jimpressions,” the second half of which will showcase his amazing improvisational skills, at the La Paloma Theater in Encinitas, located at 471 S. Coast Hwy. 101.  For more information, call (760) 436-7469.

And tune into 1580 AM Saturday, May 11 at 1 AM to hear Jim’s and Phil’s in-studio interview on “Carolyn Fox’s Hollywood Spotlight.”
