A Special Remembrance for Peter Bergman of the Firesign Theater

Yesterday, I attended a special remembrance for Peter Bergman, one of the founders of the comedy troupe, The Firesign Theater who recently passed away.  The room at the Electric Lodge was overflowing with people who knew, loved, and worked with Peter, the man who created “Radio Free Oz.”

Although Firesign members Phil Proctor and David Ossman hosted the event, many of those in attendance also shared stories of Peter.  As you would expect at the memorial for a comic genius, the remembrances were both funny and touching, often both at the same time.

In honor of Peter and the Firesign Theater album “I Think We’re All Bozos on This Bus,” there were clown noses for everyone.  As you can see in this photo of Phil, even the mirrored angel wore a red rubber nose in memory of Bergman.

My sympathy goes out to Peter’s daughter Lily, the members of the Firesign Theater, and all of the loved ones, friends, and fans everywhere who will miss Peter Bergman.

Phil Proctor of The Firesign Theater on Carolyn Fox’s Hollywood Spotlight

This week Carolyn Fox’s Hollywood Spotlight is a special humor edition, featuring funny man and wildly versatile actor Phil Proctor as our in-studio guest.

As a member of the four-man comedy troupe, The Firesign Theater, Phil worked with Peter Bergman, Phil Austin and David Ossman on such irreverent albums as How Can You Be in Two Places at Once (When You’re Not Anywhere at All)”, “Don’t Crush That Dwarf, Hand Me the Pliers,” “The Tale of the Giant Rat of Sumatra,” and “Waiting for the Electrician, or Someone Like Him.”  If you’ve ever heard Rocky Rococo in one of the group’s Nick Danger hardboiled detective spoofs, you’ve heard Phil Proctor at work (Phil, as Rocky, is the gent in the red fez in the photo.)

Sadly, Peter Bergman recently passed away.  Phil told stories of creating and touring with Peter, who has been described as the beating heart of the Firesign Theater. Phil and the other remaining members of the group will remember Peter in a live stage show called, “Peter Bergman’s Big Brouhaha, a Tribute by The Firesign Theater,” on Saturday, March 21 at 7 PM at the Kirkland Performance Center in Kirkland, Washington.  If you’ll be in the great Northwest, you’ll want to catch this show.

Also on this week’s broadcast radio show, you’ll hear the host, Carolyn Fox, spin some of your requests for the funniest song ever.

Phil Proctor of Firesign Theater in the Studio with Carolyn Fox

Phil Proctor is one funny guy!  This member of the Firesign Theater, a hilarious comedy team with a surreal sense of humor, had us in stitches when he recently came into the studio.  He shared how the group began, the inspiration for “Don’t Crush That Dwarf, Hand Me the Pliers” “Waiting for the Electrician, or Someone Like Him,” and “How Can you Be in Two Places at Once,” among other albums, as well as their books.

Of course, he paid tribute to Peter Bergman, who’s untimely passing was about three weeks ago.  Phil remembers Peter with humor, affection, and a hand picked Nick Danger, Third Eye clip featuring Peter on the mic.

Phil’s interview was too much for one broadcast to hold!  So a portion of the Phil’s in-studio wit will be posted on our Internet-only podcast series, “After Hours.”  You won’t want to miss him telling the story of the naked Sunday school teacher and the wrestler.  Watch for postings of these up-coming podcasts at CFoxRocks.com and CarolynFoxRocks.com

Tune in Saturday, April 7th at 1 AM to 1580 AM in Los Angeles and much of Orange County for Carolyn Fox’s Hollywood Spotlight’s humor special, featuring special guest Phil Proctor of the Firesign Theater.
