From Russia With Love–Guests Ilya Lagutenko of Mumiy Troll and Marina V. on Carolyn Fox’s Hollywood Spotlight

This week, Carolyn Fox’s Hollywood Spotlight brings you rock and roll from Russia, with two special guests, Ilya Lagutenko, founder and front man for the band Mumiy Troll and award-winning singer-songwriter Marina V.

Mumiy Troll (pronounced Moo-me Troll) is wildly successful in Russia, where it was voted “Best Band of the Millennium.”  Ilya Lagutenko, the charismatic driving force behind the band, shares what it was like playing rock behind the Iron Curtain, when the Soviet government forced bands to go underground.  A local Communist Party official condemned Mumiy Troll as “one of the most socially dangerous bands in the world,” right alongside Black Sabbath. Recorded in LA, their yet-to-be-released CD, “Vladivostok,” is their first album in English.

Marina V. came into the studio to discuss her life, her music and  and her new CD, “My Star.”  With a beautiful clear singing voice and unique songwriting style, Marina V. spent the first 15 years of her life in Moscow, listening to the Beatles and Guns N’ Roses.  She explains how she came to the US, her process for writing songs and being flown to London to accept a songwriting award from Bob Geldof.  Marina also confesses her secret husband.

From Moscow to Malibu; Singer-Songwriter Marina V. After Hours

Moscow-born Marina V. is not your stereotypical Russian.  Now a confirmed Southern California girl, she’s not your typical singer-songwriter either.  With a beautiful clear voice and unique songs, Marina V. shares her process for writing music and lyrics, as well as how she raised funds to produce her new CD, “My Star.”  A devoted Beatles fan, Marina tells of seeing Paul McCartney play live in an intimate setting at Amoeba Music in Hollywood.

She also reveals her secret husband!

The Russians are Coming–To LA Radio on “Carolyn Fox’s Hollywood Spotlight”

On Saturday, March 3, “Carolyn Fox’s Hollywood Spotlight” will feature not one, but two Russian musical guests.

Mumiy Troll is hugely popular and influential in the former Soviet Union, where it has been voted “Band of the Millennium” by Russian music fans.  The band’s founder and front man, Ilya Lagutenko, has a charismatic energy that perfectly compliments Mumiy Troll’s earthy,  yet often ethereal, sound.  Ilya will discuss their new, soon-to-be-released album, “Valdivostok”

In addition, Russian-born singer-songwriter Marina V. will be a featured guest in the studio.  You may have heard her music as the theme song to movies like “Fallen Idol” and “Truth About Kerry,” as well as network TV shows and games.  She recently won an award from Sir Bob Geldof for one of the songs on her new CD, “My Star.”

You’ll also hear other international artists and tunes on Saturday, Mar. 3 at 1 AM on 1580 AM in the Greater Los Angeles area, on our East Coast affiliate stations, and, after the air date, on the Internet at CFoxRocks.com

Oscar-Nominated Songs WON’T be on TV Tonight, but Hear Them Here–on “Carolyn Fox’s Hollywood Spotlight” Movie Music Special

With the Academy Awards upon us, nationally syndicated broadcast radio show “Carolyn Fox’s Hollywood Spotlight” features movie music, including the nominees for Best Song of 2012, Oscar-winning tunes from previous years, and other movie-related tunes.

Robert Davi, perhaps best known for playing a James Bond villain in “License to Kill,” the FBI agent in “Die Hard,” or the agent in the 90’s TV series “Profiler,” is one actor who can really sing.  In an in-studio interview, Robert opens up about his newly-released CD, “Davi Sings Sinatra: On the Road to Romance.”  With this musical departure from his tough-guy image, Davi embraces his sensitive side, singing love songs Sinatra made famous, including the Oscar-winning tune, “All the Way.”

This celebration of Hollywood also has an international flavor, with music from “Rio” and “Slumdog Millionaire.”

Our featured guest will be actor Robert Davi, perhaps best known for playing a James Bond villain in “License to Kill,” an FBI agent in “Die Hard,” or an agent in the 90′s TV show “Profiler.”  In addition to being a fine actor, Davi is also an amazing singer.  With the release of his new CD, “Robert Davi Sings Sinatra: On the Road to Romance,” Davi embraces his sensitive side with a collection of love songs made famous by Frank Sinatra.  Davi has a special connection with Ol’ Blue Eyes, as his screen debut was opposite Sinatra in the TV movie “Contract on Cherry Street.”  Tonight you’ll hear him sing the Oscar-winning song, “All the Way.”

Phil Proctor (of Firesign Theatre) and the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet bring Don Quixote to Life at USC

Last night I was privileged to attend “The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote, Words and Music from the time of Cervantes” at USC’s Bovard Auditorium through the university’s “Visions and Voices” program.

The concept of the program was fascinating–a theatrical reading of the adapted novel, accompanied by Spanish guitar music from around the 17th century, i.e. a selection of pieces that Cervantes could have heard during his lifetime.  The Grammy award-winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet (John Dearman, Matthew Greif, William Kanengiser, and Scott Tennant) selected and brilliantly performed diverse classics of Spanish guitar.  This was a multimedia presentation, complete with artwork depicting scenes from the story, projected onto a large screen.  The effect was like the classiest imaginable reading of a bedtime story for grownups.

Comic genius Phil Proctor read the story, embodying over a dozen characters throughout the course of the show.  Phil has won many awards, including 3 Grammy’s as a member of the Firesign Theatre, a four-man satirical comedy group often referred to as “America’s Monty Python,” or the “Beatles of Comedy.”  In this reading of “Don Quixote,” Phil gave the characters unique voices, mannerisms and attitudes.  A veteran actor, Phil is no stranger to voice work–he’s won 3 daytime Emmy’s for the role of Howard in “Rugrats,” and was the voice of seahorse Bob in Pixar’s “Finding Nemo,” Charlie in “Monsters, Inc.,” and the drunken French monkey in Eddie Murphy’s “Dr. Dolittle” series.

At the end of the show, the Phil and the LA Guitar Quartet brought down the house with a song parody of “To Dream the Impossible Dream” (“To Sing this Impossible Song.”)  It was the perfect finale for a special evening.
