Where to Celebrate the Oscars in Los Angeles 2013

The Hollywood Roosevelt Don’t have an invitation to the Governor’s Ball or Elton’s after party?  No worries. Los Angeles is in its element on Oscar night and there are lots of special events and parties to attend.  Here are a few suggestions if you’re looking for a way to celebrate the Academy Awards this year.

Historic Hollywood, The Hollywood Roosevelt HotelFor a glimpse of historic Hollywood across the street from the Red Carpet, there’s no better to enjoy the Oscars than at the site of the very first Academy Awards ceremony in 1929, the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.  On Sunday night, Feb. 24, the Hollywood Roosevelt will host a viewing dinner and party with a six-course menu and cocktail for $89 ($99 with admission to the party). The show will be screened on four big plasma screens in the lobby, which will be transformed into a viewing lounge. Although Oscar night Puck will be busy serving the stars at the Governor’s Ball you can enjoy the special Red Carpet menu ($65) at the Hotel Bel-Air. The menu features dishes he’s served at the Oscars after party over the last 19 years, such as chicken liver pastrami on rye spanikopita, Maryland blue crab cakes with basil pesto aioli, grilled lamb chops with cilantro mint raita, and hazelnut dacquoise with salted caramel golden souffle cake. This Friday on LA Radio, the Oscars Special with Guest Kyle Branche

You’ll hear an in-studio interview with Paul Mark of Paul Mark and the Van Dorens.  He’ll discuss his the making of his most recent CD, “Smartest Man in the Room,” as well as the shooting of the video of their cover of the Dylan tune “Don’t Ya Tell Henry.”  The vid looks and sounds exactly like a great night out in the club.  Since Paul is a blazing hot blues guitarist, it’s a rare moment to see him at the mic without his guitar, just singing.

The syndicated broadcast radio show, “Carolyn Fox’s Hollywood Spotlight” brings you a special Mardi Gras broadcast.  Carolyn’s guest is Grammy-nominated artist Lisa Haley & the Zydekats.  A Louisiana girl, she plays both cajun and zydeco, raising the roof with her blue fiddle and rhythms that invite listeners to get up and dance.

Where to Celebrate Mardi Gras in Los Angeles 2013

Screen shot 2013-02-08 at 6.39.14 PMAlthough New Orleans is famous for its Mardi Gras celebration, Fat Tuesday is celebrated worldwide.  In Rio it’s Carnival, Germany it’s Fasching, and here in Los Angeles, dedicated revelers can find fellow merrymakers if they know where to look.  Here are a few suggestions of how to celebrate around greater Los Angeles.

Farmers Market Mardi Gras–The party starts at noon on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 9 and 10, with parades, costume contests and music.  Saturday night, Grammy nominee Lisa Haley & the Zydekats will play starting at 6 pm.  Then on the day itself, Tuesday, Feb. 12, starting at 6:30, Eddie Baytos and the Nervis Bros. provide the entertainment.  6333 West 3rd St., Los Angeles.  http://origin.library.constantcontact.com/download/get/file/1101527824990-402/Mardi+Gras+Flyer.pdf

Long Beach Village Mardi GrasSaturday, Feb. 9 at Shoreline Village and Rainbow Harbor, Mardi Gras returns to Long Beach.  The parade starts at 3 PM in front of the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific.  The celebration will include music, art, costumes, stilt-walkers, etc.  This free event is promised to go on, rain or shine.

Screen shot 2013-02-08 at 6.50.17 PMAmoeba Music on Sunset–Amoeba Music will host its annual Mardi Gras celebration on Tuesday, Feb. 12.  The party starts at 2:00 PM and there will be music, beads, and goodies for the kids.  The parade starts at 4:30 PM and everyone is encouraged to bring a musical instrument and play “When the Saints Go Marching In.”  There’s no charge for this event, and everyone is welcome.  6400 Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90028.

Ragin’ Cajun Fat Tuesday Mardi GrasTuesday, Feb. 12, Cajun Chef Steven Domingue takes over the Amalfi Restaurant to host a Mardi Gras party.  Lisa Haley & the Zydekats will provide live music. 143 North La Brea Ave. in Los Angeles.

Screen shot 2013-02-08 at 7.22.05 PMThe Federal Bar Mardi Gras PartySaturday, Feb. 9, The Federal Bar will host a Mardi Gras celebration with Catahoula, a Cajun-flavored seven-piece swamp rock band. Even if you can’t make the Saturday show, the New Orleans cuisine will be offered now through Tuesday (Fat Tuesday), February 12, including beignets, jambalaya ($15), and peel & eat crawfish boil ($18) with corn, boiled potatoes and drawn butter, plus Abita beer straight from their Louisiana brewery, SOS Pils, Turbo Dog Restoration Pale Ale, Jockamo IPA, Vanilla Double Dog and Mardi Gras Bock.  North Hollywood. 5303 Lankershim Boulevard in North Hollywood.

Screen shot 2013-02-08 at 6.42.32 PMKing Cake— If you’re hosting your own Mardi Gras party, or would just like a taste of a New Orleans Mardi Gras tradition, check out King Cake.  This colorful wreath-shaped cake has a plastic baby Jesus baked into it.  Whoever finds the baby Jesus in their slice, hosts the next party.  Last year I saw lots of posts asking where to find King Cake in Los Angeles, but no answers.  As a public service to partiers, here are two local Los Angeles bakeries where you can get King Cake: Porto’s Bakery and Cafe in Burbank, Glendale and Downey, and New Orleans Sweet Treats in Los Angeles.

Mardi Gras on the Air Tonight in Los Angeles

Our special guest is Lisa Haley, of Lisa Haley & the Zydecats. This Louisiana girl is the real deal, with a step-father who was a cajun accordion player who moved the family to Los Angeles.  Lisa plays her famous blue fiddle, with a rich repertoire of cajun and zydeco music, including many original songs.

Lisa HaleyLisa will be playing a several Mardi Gras shows, including one at 6 PM tomorrow night, Saturday at the Farmers Market in Hollywood, and on Fat Tuesday itself, Feb. 12, she’ll be at Ragin’ Cajun Mardi Gras at the Amalfi Restaurant at 143 N. La Brea Ave. at Beverly and West 1st St. with Chef Steven Domingue.

The party starts tonight on your radio with the broadcast of “Carolyn Fox’s Hollywood Spotlight.”  In Los Angeles, tune your dial to 1580 AM at midnight to hear a selection of American music celebrating New Orleans and the Mardi Gras tradition.  This special will also air tomorrow, Saturday Feb. 9, at 6 PM in Annapolis/Baltimore on 810 AM and on Sunday, Feb. 10 on the show’s website at CFoxRocks.com.

"Carolyn Fox's Hollywood Spotlight" bring you what's hot in HollywoodThis week, the syndicated broadcast radio show “Carolyn Fox’s Hollywood Spotlight” is a little bit like a well-dressed bride–it has something new, something borrowed and something blue.

One of the new tunes is the brand new single from 10-time Grammy winner George Benson, “The One for Me.”  An instant classic that is perfect for any romantic situation, this is a song to fall in love with.   Another new release is a rocker from The Doughboys new “Shaking Our Souls” CD, “Land.”

One of the “borrowed” tracks is Paul Mark & the Van Doren’s cover of the Bob Dylan song, “Don’t Ya Tell Henry.”  Paul recorded the vocals “live” with three fabulous backup singers, and from the video, the session was one heck of a party.  You can check out the video on the home page of show’s website.

As for something blue, a new track from Ian Siegel and the Mississippi Mudbloods, “I am the Train,” has a driving rhythm that’s bound to get you moving.  Plus, Maria Muldaur brings her “bluesainna” sound to a soulful rendition of “Please Send Me Someone to Love.”

She also tells how she partnered with Michael MacFarlane and is now designing Celtic and Wiccan inspired sculpture, fine art prints, jewelry and Tee-shirts for Celtic Jackalope.
